Monsoon health guide: Tips for kids to stay infection-free

The onset of monsoons is not just a respite from the hot months of May and June, it can also give rise to various infections. The high level of humidity in the air increases mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria, cholera, typhoid and diarrhoea.

Due to the rise in these water-borne diseases, the risk of developing infections, especially among kids, also increases. To protect children from such diseases, it is important to keep your surroundings clean and give heed to some preventive measures, says Dr Jayant Khandare, Consultant Pediatrics and Neonatology, Surya Mother and Child Super Speciality Hospital, Pune.

According to the Dr Jayant Khandare,

 

  • Mosquito repellants and nets should be installed at home to shield children from mosquito bites.
  • Dressing them in long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks can provide an extra layer of protection.
  • “One key aspect is ensuring that children are dressed appropriately – encouraging them to wear full sleeves clothes, socks, and shoes can help minimize their exposure to mosquitoes. Further, it is important for children to carry and apply mosquito repellents to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases,” says Dr Khandare.
  • Maintaining personal hygiene is imperative, suggests the expert. Parents should encourage children to wash their hands frequently and take a shower immediately after getting wet in the rain to minimise the risk of diseases.
  • “It is also essential to equip them with the necessary rain protection, including an umbrella and raincoat. Prolonged exposure to rainwater and dampness can weaken their immune system, making them more susceptible to illnesses,” advised the health expert.
  • Additionally, having the right kinds of foods helps build immunity to reduce susceptibility to infections.
  • “Ensure that children consume nutritious foods such as citrus fruits, leafy vegetables, yogurt with probiotics, mushrooms, berries and lean meats to boost immunity,” says Dr Khandare, adding that keeping kids hydrated with an adequate intake of filtered fluids should be of top priority.
  • If a child is experiencing symptoms such as fever, cold, or cough, it is important for them to stay at home, instead of heading to school. This not only helps in their own recovery but also prevents the spread of infections to other students and teachers.
